Fuel Barons, Inc. ceases operations / files Chapter 11 Bankruptcy
Due to a number of tragic injuries resulting from improper use of gel fuel in outdoor party lights and ensuing lawsuits, Fuel Barons, Inc. has ceased operations and on January 24, 2012 filed a voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition in the United States Bankruptcy Court, Northern District of Georgia, Atlanta Division (Case No. 12-51650).
Gel Fuel Recall
In conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission ("CPSC"), Fuel Barons, Inc. issued a recall notice for all bottles of ethanol Pourable Gel Fuel sold under the OZOfire® and SUREFIRE™ brand names. (Formula 4 and Formula 5)
It was determined that when fuel is poured into an open flame or in the presence of a source of ignition, it is possible for the fire to follow the stream of ethanol vapor and enter the bottle, thereby creating a flash fire or explosion. Use of all Pourable Gel Fuel should be ceased immediately and should be disposed of properly. Read the CPSC announcement at: http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml11/11315.html
Consumers possessing gel fuel should either: (a) return it to the retail store where it was purchased; (b) send it to the hazardous materials recycling center nearest them; or (c) send it to:
MXI Environmental Corp.
26319 Old Trail Road
Abingdon VA 24210

Retailers and Distributors should send the gel fuel to the hazardous materials recycling center nearest them or to:

WARNING!!
Regarding Liquid Ethanol Fuel for Indoor Ventless Fireplaces
Similar injuries have not been reported for liquid ethanol fuel used in indoor ventless fireplaces; Nor has the CPSC investigated these ethanol fuels, or issued a recall notice. However, in the interest of safety, Fuel Barons recognizes the same potential for explosion exists should liquid fuel be poured into an open flame or burner with a source of ignition nearby. Fuel Barons voluntarily ceased all shipments of liquid ethanol fuel after the CPSC announced it findings. If you are using ANY pourable liquid ethanol fuel, exercise extreme caution and follow all warnings on the bottles and safety instructions provided by the manufacturer of the fireplace(s).
